Shadow Phase 1 and 2
My relationship with Plymouth has 3 phases. 2009-12, 2016-18 and then again in 2022.
The imagery is split between artwork for the music Album Shadow (2018) which I unknowingly started photographing in 2016, and artwork for a project within my Photography MA in 2022. I sent a few copies out to friends but didn't released the album Shadow.
If the first phase was about my imposed personal mythology in response to contemporary events. The second phase was about the perception of the area. Paul Nash’s events outside human perception. Spirit loci. William Blakes 4-fold vision, T C Lethbridge’s parapsychology. What wasn’t I seeing? How did the events that happened in this space influence how I saw it. The idea of peripatetic memory. Memories of events you hadn’t directly experienced it. How did animals perceive this environment? what did pigeons see if I photographed them?
The MA photography was an opportunity to develop the ideas. Consequently, although the concepts are linked, I don’t they don’t sit coherently together. This is an approach I actively worked with in later projects “The Lake” and “The Drift”: The Powell and Pressburger colour- black and white split in a matter of life and death, the fantasy sections in the Red Shoes or Gene Kelly fantasy interludes in MGM musicals. Reality and fantasy mixing.
